A Travel Guide to U.S. Virgin Islands + What to Pack

If you’re looking for your next tropical hotspot, add the U.S. Virgin Islands to your list. We’re currently itching for a beach vacay, but then again, when aren’t we?! Laying on the beach, hiking through rainforests, and sipping on refreshing cocktails always sounds appealing. Between St. Croix, St. John, and St. Thomas, the U.S. Virgin Islands are home to some of our favorite destinations. We spent most of our time on St. John but a lot of our favorite activities can be done on any of the islands. Plan your next getaway with this travel guide, plus, the perfect packing list to go along with it.

What to Do

People travel to the Caribbean for a reason – the scenery, weather, and water being incomparable – so take advantage of it! Here are our best suggestions:

Try out different local beaches. Each island is home to numerous beautiful beaches, so make sure you don’t stick to just one! Hop around and find the one that’s right for you because some are more populated, some more remote, and some offer plenty of activities right on the sand.

Island Hop: One of our favorite excursions was taking boats from island to island. We were able to visit different shops, snorkeling coves, and beach bars. Plus, nothing beats spending a day out on that crystal blue water!

Catamaran Cruise: Keeping with the boating theme, a catamaran cruise is a great way to see the islands at sunset. It’s beautiful, peaceful, and usually a little boozy ;).

Hike: There are more so many tropical trails to take advantage of on the islands. We made our way through a few on St. John that featured small pools, old sugar mills, and finished at the most remote and beautiful beaches.

Cocktails to Sip:

Painkiller: This coconut cream cocktail is loaded with rum, pineapple and orange juice, and topped with cinnamon. If you’re like us, this will be your go to order!

Bushwacker: This deliciously sweet concoction is made with Kahlua, Baileys, vodka, and amaretto for the perfect almond aftertaste. It goes down easy – so be wary of it’s strength!

Rum Punch: Just as it sounds, this cocktail is a tropical punch spiked with rum. Try it with St. Croix’s very own Cruzan rum for the most authentic drink. Yum, yum!

What to Bring:

We know you wouldn’t leave home without the essentials; bathing suit, sunblock, and sandals. But these are a few additional items we highly suggest you take along!

Athletic wear is a must. There are so many beautiful hikes to embark on and adventures where you will want athletic shoes, shorts, and tops.

Accessories: We’ll be more specific; you will need a hat, sunnies, a beach tote, and a small backpack when you don’t want to carry a big bag on outdoor excursions

Beach Essentials: The aforementioned bathing suite, sunblock, and sandals are a given, but you may also want to bring a beach towel, especially if you are staying at a residence where there won’t be lounging towels to take off property. Also, don’t forget a beach read or any sand games you may want to play.

The weather is typically warm all of the time, so sundresses, shorts and t-shirts should have you covered when it comes to daily outfits.

Where is your favorite tropical destination?
