Styling a Dress in Winter with Convey The Moment

We hardly know what it’s like to bear weather under 60 degrees out here in L.A. but Eleni Mc Mullin, the gal behind the stylish blog, Convey The Moment, lives a different story in Calgary! She’s showing us how she braves the cold up there (and looks mighty good doing it) on our style blog today. See how she is styling dresses this season and learn a thing or two about her life as a style blogger!

When and why did you start your blog?

I started my blog one year ago in January. I had recently put my career goals as a registred nurse on hold to meet the demands of my husband’s job but realized very quickly I needed to be working at something for myself. I started my blog as a hobby and it quickly turned into a business which I am so grateful for and absolutely adore doing.

We love following along with Convey the Moment and all your adventures! Where do you find inspiration for your style as well as everyday life?

I think most of my inspiration comes from my personality. I literally just do what I like and don’t really focus on if it’s “cool” or not. It works for me because I think people can really see my creative side through my style. When I’m stumped I’ll reach for my Pinterest.

What does an average day look like for you?

It all depends where we are in the year. We kind of live a crazy life given the fact my husbands work season is only four months long. This gives us a lot of freedom so we love to travel and do so every chance we get. But if we are grounded in the city you can almost always find us at a hot yoga class after our morning coffee and then followed by eating at some of our favorite local restaurants. My husband and I love spending time together apparently, haha.

We can’t go all Winter without some of our favorite dresses! How are you styling dresses and still bearing the cold?

Styling dresses for the winter is something I’ve had no choice but to master. Our winters are absolutely freezing so I always count on layers and opaque tights to complete a look. As long as the dress isn’t screaming summer you can almost always make it work. I’ll look for patterns and colors that are season appropriate and then pair them with a pair of booties, tights, and a jacket that compliments the look. I also LOVE adding accessories to make it really my own so this is when I reach for sunnies and headpieces or a hat. I rely on accessories so much—especially when I don’t have time to tame my curls.

With Spring around the corner, where are you finding pieces that can transition through the seasons?

This is probably the hardest time of year when it comes to styling for me. I am so eager for spring (how could I not be we have the longest winters!) but I know I have to be patient and wait until its weather permitting. I’ll usually skim the spring sections in some of my favorite stores like Anthropologie and Nordstrom’s to see what my options are and make them weather appropriate. I always avoid open toed shoes and bright floral prints (even in accessories) till the snow clears up. These are rules I’ve made for myself and I never follow rules when it comes to fashion other than these two.
