How To Throw a Derby Party

It’s almost Derby Day! Whether you’re into horse races or not, the Kentucky Derby is a classic event worth celebrating, and meant to be celebrated in style. Last Derby season, Olivia Leigh Photographie captured this wonderful Derby Party, full of Southern glamor. From private chefs, to live music, and even a horse, it rings in Derby Day like no other! It is sure to inspire you to put on your finest hats this weekend and whip up a batch of Mint Juleps…don’t mind if we do! Below, the planner, Christine of Christine Janda Design and Events, shares how you can make it all possible with her with a few derby party tips.

A Few Tips for Your Own Derby Party

1. Easy Viewing of The Race

You’ll want your guests to have easy viewing of “the most exciting two minutes of sports”! For our outside celebration we created a canopy where our TV display was to ensure no sunny glares. No TV outside – no problem! Stream it on your speakers for the exciting play-by-play.

2. Little Touches Turn Spring Decor to Derby Fun

You don’t need to purchase (and store!) another crate of specialty decor like other big “up for the month” holidays. Little sweet touches like leaning a horseshoe on existing home decor or printing vintage photos from past Derby fashion fabulousness and framing them is so fun. For this party we purchased tiny toy horses, spray painted them gold, and embellished our florals. Guests notice and it makes everything feel a little more special.

3. For the Menu, Go Southern!

Mint Juleps, sweet cream and southern biscuits, shrimp and grits; need we say more (or do we really ever NEED an excuse to eat this good?!). I love anything interactive; an easy breezy one-station setup would be southern biscuits + fried chicken with all the fixins. A pickle bar, various slaws and mustards. YUM!
