Decorating with Interior Designer Becki Owens

  • Name: Becki Owens
  • Company: Becki Owens
  • Title: Interior Designer
  • City: Orange County, CA
We’ve been crushing on Becki Owens interiors for a while now thanks to her awe-inspiring Instagram. She packs it with naturally lit images of beautiful and classic designs she’s brought into people’s homes. Whether you’re looking to gawk over all white kitchens, or living rooms and cozy beds that make you want to curl up with a good book, she shares it all right there. We asked her all about how she got her start and what it takes to be a good designer here.

NO. 01

How did you get started in the design industry? Has this always been your passion?

I worked with my father in his paint store when I was a little girl and went to his job sites where he renovated homes. I used to love to help mix the paints and play with color. That’s when I first fell in love with design and architecture. Design has always been a creative outlet for me. After I got my degree, I worked for a  design firm in Utah and then my husband and I moved to California where I took time to have my four children. I knew I would return to design when the time was right. Now, that my children are a little older, I’m able to take on projects I love.

When did you know you wanted to start your own company?

I never had a set goal to start my own business. It just evolved from a few projects I took on. The growth of my business has been very organic and much faster than I had anticipated. It’s been amazing to see it grow, and I love the new projects I’m working on.

We love the unique patterns you come up with. Where do you draw your inspiration from?

I draw inspiration from fashion, travel and my constant search for beautiful inspiration. For my recent textile collection with Guildery, I incorporated some of my favorite patterns like paisleys, watercolors and colorful pink hues that I had been drawn to. I also love using Pinterest. It’s a great tool for organizing the inspirations I love.

We know how much you love mixing and matching patterns. Do you have any advice on how to do this properly?

I like to think outside the lines of traditional design standards. I don’t follow any set rules when I’m designing a space. I usually start with a pattern I love and build around it. But I like to keep my spaces clean and fresh. It doesn’t take a lot to make a big impact. Beautiful vintage textiles mixed in a variety of colors on a sofa with modern, clean lines makes a gorgeous statement.

What is your #1 design tip?

Research and take your time. Save money for the pieces you really want so you can design a space right the first time. It makes all the difference if you can complete the whole look of a space. Styling a room with beautiful accessories is just as important as selecting larger furniture pieces.

What is your current must-have in your home?

Good lighting!!  Beautiful lighting can transform a home. I love to look for lighting that makes a statement and adds beauty and character to a home. It’s worth splurging on, especially in a kitchen, over an island, in a dining room or entry way.

Dream Collab?

I would love to do something with my love for fashion and interiors. Design a space for one of my favorite clothing brands or a product. I’m in love with the bohemian looks of Free People and Spell Designs.
