If you aren’t familiar with Bling Wipes, you’re about to reach for one of these cute packs to make your engagement ring (or any bling) all the sparklier. We caught up with founder, Ellie Richardson, while she & Angela Margolis of Sterling Social talked bridal boxes over mani/pedis. The handy bling wipes are the perfect addition to curated baskets Angela gifts her clients with! And what better place than Olive & June Pasadena to polish their nails and prep their hands for the perfect bling shot?
We absolutely love Bling Wipes! How did it all begin?
Thank you! It all started with a diamond ring. My husband, Evan, proposed to me in 2009 and little did he know he was also giving me the idea for what is now Bling Wipes. Being the most beautiful thing I had ever owned, I wore and still wear my ring constantly, hardly ever taking it off. I quickly noticed how easily I could dull the sparkle with daily wear. Applying lotion, working out, cooking, basically everything I did made my ring less sparkly. I traveled for my job at the time and one day I was sitting on an airplane and looked down and thought how nice it would be to have an easy way to shine up my diamond right there from my seat. This had me thinking and I realized that if there was a functional product that was attractive and fun it could solve my problems while also being something I could give to my friends and thus, the Bling Wipes idea was born.
Running your own business can be challenging, what's your best business advice?
1. Surround yourself with positive people who believe in you and inspire you and you will stay motivated and moving forward. Find a mentor or a group of fellow entrepreneurs and touch base, have coffee, share stories and experiences. There is nothing more invigorating than recharging with a friend who shares a passion for their work and yours.
2. You never know what is going to come your way on a given day and remembering tomorrow is a new day filled with new challenges and opportunities can help you see past any of today’s bumps in the road. I have found that challenges and obstacles are most often opportunities for me to fine tune a current method and process what needs improving.
3. Balance. Make time for family and friends. The more time I spend with my husband, my son, my family and friends, the better I am at my job. I don’t feel deprived or overworked but instead fulfilled in both aspects of my life. Some days are definitely more balanced than others but that is okay too. I’m still learning.
What's a typical 'day at the office' for you?
The early morning is spent having breakfast with my husband and my son which is the perfect way to set the tone for my day. I make fresh coffee in my Chemex, which I love, and then check in on my emails and handle any open items. The day might be spent focusing on our warehouse, working on our marketing plans or catching up with our stores and buyers. One of my favorite things to do is connect with our retailers, many of whom have become my friends. I feel that every store that carries our product is a little home for Bling Wipes and it is such a great feeling. We have the best stores and customers and they make my job so much fun. As an entrepreneur I wear many hats and while some days it feels like a juggling act it is always an adventure.
If you didn't start Bling Wipes, what would you be doing?
I’ve always dreamed of owning a cute neighborhood gourmet market with lots of friendly regular customers. Maybe one day!
We already know you're a fan of the O&J Mani/Pedi - any other beauty secrets?
Beauty for me these days has to be quick because with a toddler and a business I don’t get a ton of time in front of the mirror. Dr. Dennis Gross makes these amazing glow pads for the face and body. They’re individually packaged so you can take them when you travel and they exfoliate while also providing a nice sun kissed glow to your skin. Love them! I’m also a big fan of coconut oil for everything from face cream to chap stick to make up remover. Oh, and mascara! Can’t live without it.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
This is always such a hard question. I have always been a big planner and list maker and recently I have tried not to look too far ahead into the future. The present is full of so much goodness that I want to make sure I am enjoying it and not missing out on all the great things in my life, right now. It would be a dream if the next five years were full of growth for both Bling Wipes and my family but only time will tell…
