Have you ever heard of the interior design style coastal meets farmhouse? Well, if the answer is no then you are not alone. If we had to describe it we would say, think that the best of both coastal decor and timeless farmhouse design elements meet to create a classic decor style. This El Segundo home that we have the pleasure of sharing with you all today features both of these design styles in the best way possible. Not only do we have a gallery of images of the stunning home, but we also had the pleasure of interviewing the home owners. Scroll on to hear from the homeowners Kim & Scott Nichol with Nicole Real Estate.
Where is your home located, and how was the home buying process for you?
Our home is located in El Segundo, California. People refer to our community as ‘Mayberry By The Sea’. My husband Scot (a South Bay real estate agent with Compass), was contacted to possibly list or rent the vacant run down home. When he saw the property, (and 9000 sq ft lot that is hard to come by), his remodeling wheels started turning. With much uncertainty on how we would fund the project, we decided to buy it.
What was the condition of your home when you purchased it? Did you do any major renovations?
The home was borderline condemned when we bought it, but this was our 4th major remodel as a couple, and we gutted it. My husband is extremely talented at visualizing the potential of every home he walks into. He’s the master of re-working floor plans and exterior home design concepts, and then I handle the esthetics and interior details.
If you had to describe your interior design style, what would you say?
Oh man, our style is a true hybrid, but if we had to pick a lane to stay in, it would be coastal. There is a hint of modern farm, and the exterior feels like a beach cottage, but my personal style is boho at heart, and if we were millionaires I would be drenched in Anthropologie and Free People 24/7.
Where do you go to gain inspiration for your home decor?
One of our favorite homes of all time is ‘The Lily Pad Cottage’. Kelly doesn’t miss a beat on coastal style. We appreciate contemporary and flashy homes, but there is something so important to me as a mother, that a home feels comfortable and inviting.
What room is your favorite, and why?
That’s easy… the kitchen. The polished nickel fixtures, the rattan accents, the splash of wallpaper, and all the shades of grey set the tone for our entire home. We’re really proud of how that space came together.
Any plans for future renovations, or is your home complete?
Yes! Our bedroom! It has always been an afterthought in every home we have built. We put our time and funding into the major spaces like the kitchen, and patio. But our goal for next year is to spice up the master bedroom with some fresh decor and add a fireplace… stand by!
