Dressing Up Denim with Not Your Standard

Who doesn’t love denim?! Vests, jeans, and everything in between, it’s our forever favorite, but dressing up denim can seem difficult. Not Your Standard knows better and shows us how to sneak denim into our outfits while still looking pulled together and dressed up! Living in the fashion capital of Germany, this Berlin blogger has that effortlessly cool European style (that we really want!) so we are heeding all her advice!

Blog: Not Your Standard

Location: Berlin

Not Your Standard is such an interesting blog name! Tell us a little bit about how you started out and where the name came from.

The reason I started a blog was to be able to share my lifestyle; a certain standard of living, so to speak. I played around with a lot of different words and I kept going back to the word standard. I didn’t want my blog to just be another personal style blog, I needed it to be different than the standard one. Not Your Standard fit perfectly when describing it to others.

What made you decide to move to Germany?

My boyfriend and I traveled to Europe a few years back and ended up spending a month in Berlin. We rented an apartment and even though we only spent a short time there, something about the city resonated with us. This city has a charm about it that you instantly fall in love with. You can really make it whatever you want it to be and for us that felt like a good place to start the next chapter in our lives.

How is the fashion different in Germany compared to Canada where you came from or even US fashion?

It’s a lot more relaxed and casual in Germany. Your everyday wear is pretty minimal and basic; they wear sneakers like crazy but in a really chic way. There is really not one specific look, though. Everyone can be who they want to be here and no one will look twice.

No matter where you live, I think we can all agree that denim is a universal love! What are your favorite denim pieces to wear?

The boyfriend jean is an absolutely must in my closet. It’s the weekend jean that you throw on, feel comfortable in, and then have the option of switching to heels at night to give those jeans a whole new look. A good high-waisted skinny denim is go my go-to for most days, perfect with blouses, tees or cropped tops.

Denim tends to get a bad reputation as being too casual for a lot of things. How can you dress up denim for a night out or a classier event?

A pointed heel with a skinny jean makes your legs look slimmer and elongated. It creates this classic look that is perfect for a classier event. I love pairing this look with a blazer, long coat and a printed blouse (we love this one for summer!).

What is your best advice when it comes to buying denim?

Be comfortable in it. Nothing is worse than uncomfortable denim. I always like to make sure the back pockets sit at a good position, not too low or else it can make you look a lot bigger than you actually are. Always have one high-waisted pair; I find this denim to be the most versatile when it comes to pairing it with tops.

  1. Everyone can be who they want to be here and no one will look twice.

But it probably wouldn’t hurt your feelings if they did, right? 🙂

  2. Not many people can pull off those high waisted jeans, but she looks great! Great inspiration 🙂
