Designers Share Top Home Investment Pieces Worth Splurging On

When it comes to home design, not every purchase deserves a big budget. But some pieces are worth every penny. We asked interior designers to share the top home investment pieces every homeowner should splurge on and why. This is the insight you need to know before making your next home purchase.

Top Home Investment Pieces

01. A Mattress

A mattress topped the list of home investment pieces worth splurging on. Julia Day, Interior Designer Expert at Seldens, says, “Investing in a high-quality mattress elevates both the look and feel of your most personal space, making it one of the most impactful purchases a homeowner can make.”

She adds, “By prioritizing a high-quality mattress, you’re not just buying better sleep — you’re making a statement about comfort, well-being, and enduring design.”

Rick Berres, Owner of Honey-Doers, agrees: “No matter what kind of house you buy or where you live, you need a bed, and one that’s comfortable and good quality, and long-lasting.”

02. A Sofa or Sectional

The next splurge? A couch. Andrea Thompson of Drea Design Services calls it the anchor of any living space. “They not only anchor the room but are the first piece of furniture eyes land on when entering,” she explains.

She continues, “A sofa or sectional can be its own individual piece of art in a way, a conversation-starter, a long-term asset that can truly last for years and can even be a generational gift.”

According to Thompson, investing in a statement sofa gives designers creative freedom. “It’s the same way wearing a gorgeous designer dress draws eyes in and makes everything else look elevated,” she says.

Splurge vs. Save: How to Decide

Designing a home often means balancing dreams with budgets. Not every piece can be a high-ticket item, but smart choices matter.

Leslie Chapus, VP and Co-Founder of Azenco Outdoor, suggests thinking long-term. “I encourage homeowners to splurge on structural features that are difficult to change later,” she explains. That means permanent elements like flooring, cabinetry, or built-ins often deserve a higher budget since they impact the home for decades.

Other experts stress the importance of daily use. Danny Niemela, Co-owner and CFO at ArDan Construction, says, “I recommend splurging on anything you touch, walk on, or sit on every day since constant interaction exposes flaws quickly.” In other words, furniture and fixtures that see constant wear should be durable, comfortable, and built to last.

Julia Day believes it comes down to priorities when deciding what home investment pieces to splurge on. “Everyday-use items should be treated as investments, while decorative pieces can be the playground for your creativity and evolving tastes.” Accent lighting, art, and accessories can be refreshed over time, but the items you use most deserve upfront quality.

She also adds a cautionary note. “Trying to cut costs by choosing the cheapest option for high-use items like sofas, mattresses, or rugs often backfires, since low-quality pieces wear out faster and can end up costing more in replacements than the amount saved upfront.”
