4 Ways to Refresh Your Skin this Winter

Winter can be tough on our skin but that doesn’t mean it has to look like it! Dr. Jill Javahery, who practices at both El Segundo Dermatology and Comprehensive Dermatology of Long Beachis getting under your skin literally with these simple tips that will fight your facial struggle. If you’re feeling dry, tired, or lacking radiance, follow these four ways to refresh your skin this winter and watch it change dramatically.

1. So much of your skin health is linked to what you eat! We consume a lot of simple carbs, sugar, alcohol, and caffeine in our daily lives, and those things can have a real impact on the way your skin looks and feels. Start drinking more water, cutting out sugar and simple carbs, and eat more DHA healthy fats! Those changes alone will rehydrate your skin and get back that healthy glow!

2. Wear a mineral-based sun block every single day. First and foremost, sunscreen can protect your skin and help prevent further damage. Even more, mineral-based sun blocks can actually improve the appearance of your skin over time by fading dark spots and improving tone.

3. Moisturize your skin as soon as you get out of the shower. My favorite over-the-counter products are Cerave and Cetaphil Restoraderm. The newest moisturizers actually mimic the typical lipids your body makes to create a barrier between your skin and the outside world.

4. Visit your dermatologist or esthetician for a professional facial! My favorite is the HydraFacial – It’s non-invasive and combines exfoliation, cleansing, and hydrating benefits all in one treatment (with no down time)! I’m also a huge advocate of visiting your dermatologist if you have any skin problems or irritations that you’re looking to fix. He or she can develop a treatment plan and skincare regimen that’s right for you, so you don’t feel like you need to “cover up”!
