What To Do in Lisbon, Portugal

We’ve heard so many amazing things about Lisbon so we were so excited to visit this colorful coastal city! From the gorgeous architecture that just oozes history to the best bars and nightlife, Lisbon should be next on your must-visit travel list. We spent a few days in Portugal’s capital and are reporting back with where to stay, what to eat, and what to do in Lisbon!

Where to Stay:

AlmaLusa Baixa/Chiado – This boutique hotel is located in one of the most popular squares in Lisbon – Praça do Município. The decor is gorgeous, and they use local and national brands throughout the hotel, so you really feel like you’re getting a true taste of Portuguese culture. The rooms are equal parts modern and cozy, and the view of the square and coast is beautiful.

Feels Like Home Chiado – This hotel ended up being one of our favorites! Our room overlooked the entire city and it was within walking distance to several of the bars and restaurants we wanted to visit while we were in Lisbon. They had a cozy breakfast every morning and coffee & cake available in the lobby 24/7.

Where to Eat:

Mano a Mano – We couldn’t do a post on what to do in Lisbon without telling you where to eat! This restaurant was a last-minute decision, but it ended up being our favorite meal in Lisbon! They have generous wine pours and a spaghetti carbonara that will change your life. We’d recommend sharing a bottle of wine, a pizza, and a pasta!

Cervejaria Ramiro – Ramiro has some of the best seafood in Lisbon, so definitely add this to your list of spots to visit!

Pastelaria Santo Antonio – Stop here to get the traditional pasteis de nata while you’re walking through the Alfama District! They also have great donuts and other pastry options if the traditional tart isn’t your thing.

What to Do:

Visit the Alfama District at golden hour – When thinking of what to do in Lisbon, this is at the top of our list. This area of Lisbon is exactly what we picture when we think of Portugal! Colorful buildings, bougainvillea everywhere, and patio bars with gorgeous views of the beach. Stop at one of the bars and enjoy a glass of rose as you watch the sunset go down over the water!

Take a day trip to Sintra – The stunning castles in Sintra reminded us of Disneyland! Pro tip: Just get the park tickets to see the outside of the castles – The lines to get in are too long unless you’re there first thing in the morning, and you can see all of the best views from outside! Our favorite one to visit was Pena Palace.

LX Factory – This quirky spot is an old factory that has been converted into the cutest shops, bars, and restaurants. They have great pastries too, so grab a quick dessert while you’re here!

Walk the Pink Street – At night, all of the bars on this hot pink walkway open up to the street and it’s a full street party!

What to See:

The Golden Gate Bridge – Yep, you read that right! Lisbon has an exact replica of the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, a city it’s compared to often because of the steep hills and narrow streets! Fun fact – It’s even by the same architect!

Galapinhos Beach – This beach over the bridge in the Setubal is one of the most stunning we’ve ever seen. Golden white sand, crystal blue waters… Such a dream!

Jerónimos Monastery – If you make a day trip to Belem, head inside for a free tour of Jerónimos Monastery! It’s definitely one of the “old churches” in Europe that are 100% worth seeing. Trust us!

Jardim de Estrela – If gardens are more your vibe, head to this one near the Bairro Alto area of Lisbon! It has beautiful landscaping, plant-filled greenhouses, and the prettiest waterfalls.

We hope this post helps you figure out what to do in Lisbon on your next trip! After you’ve explored the capital of Portugal, check out this post on 5 European cities to visit this summer!
