This exhibition of illuminated manuscripts from the permanent collection reveals the widespread appeal and influence of saints in art and society during the Middle Ages. Connecting Seas draws on the Getty Research Institute's extensive special collections to reveal how adventures on other continents and discoveries of different cultures were perceived, represented, and transmitted in the past, when ocean travel was the primary means by which people and knowledge circulated. Featuring rare books and maps, photographs and panoramic vues d'optique, prints, and even Napoleon's monumental folios on Egypt, the exhibition traces the fascinating course of scholarly investigation and comprehension of cultures in Africa, Asia, and the Americas. Through April 13, 2014.
Violinist Hilary Hahn and Russian conductor Andrey Boreyko lead a dramatic Nordic program. Just as Brahms and Sibelius did in their violin concertos, Danish composer Carl Nielsen combines genuine gravitas with brilliant virtuosity. He began the work in Norway, where he was visiting Nina Grieg, and completed it back home in Denmark, struggling to present the solo instrument “in the best light, that is, rich in content, popular, and dazzling without becoming superficial.” Nielsen conducted the premiere in 1912, along with the first performance of his rousing Third Symphony. Performances Jan 31, Feb 1, & Feb 2.
James Turrell: A Retrospective explores nearly fifty years in the career of James Turrell (b. 1943, Los Angeles), a key artist in the Southern California Light and Space movement of the 1960s and 70s. The exhibition includes early geometric light projections, prints and drawings, installations exploring sensory deprivation and seemingly unmodulated fields of colored light, and recent two-dimensional work with holograms.
The efforts of MOCA’s Acquisition & Collection, Photography, and Drawings committees, as well as those of many generous individuals and institutions, have enabled the museum to cultivate one of the premier collections of contemporary art in the United States.
