Let’s face it, we get a little bit bored with our space every so often and look for small ways to revamp it. We are always flooded with new inspiration and love keeping our space fresh and up-to-date. However, redecorating completely is not always in the budget or timeframe.
This cute and bright budget friendly office DIY met our needs and was also a fun project to tackle when we came back in the New Year. Plus, the fresh colors instantly make the space lighter, airy, and colorful – which is always our goal. New Year, New You right? So grab your paintbrushes people, because you will want to steal this bookcase hack and maybe even paint a wall or two in your own home or office – or home office ;). Oh! And if rosy pink, lime green, and pastel blue aren’t your cup of tea when it comes to color shades – pick a little something more up your alley. BEHR® offers so many unique shades that vary from subtle to sharp.
What We Used
What We Did
To start, we measured the bookcase we wanted to back with plywood. We had plywood cut to the proper dimensions at Home Depot and then took it back to the office to start painting! Anyone else actually love to paint? We had so much fun seeing this plain ‘ole board turn into something brand new with a fresh coat of paint by our very own efforts!
We chose to paint the board on both sides in two different – and pretty opposite – colors. To be honest, we weren’t sure which one would work best in the office and wanted to give ourselves options. (Good News – we LOVED them both!) First, we did two coats of Peek A Blue on one side. The following day, after the paint had dried, we flipped it over and did two coats of Everything’s Rosy on the other side.
Next, it was time to paint the ‘CREATE’ letters above the bookcase. We always knew black just wasn’t the right hue for an inspiring word like ‘create.’ So, we painted the letters That’s My Lime. And, boy! does it make a statement! What used to be cold and boring is bright and so very fun. To paint them, we taped off the wall surrounding the letters so as not to get paint on it, and got to work. Two coats later and it looked fresh and fabulous.
Finally, (because we loved Everything’s Rosy so much) we chose to paint the wall kitty corner to the bookcase completely. If you’re hesitant to paint an entire wall – don’t be! It’s less of a commitment than painting the entire room and it makes an awesome statement. Plus, if you get sick of it, you can always paint it back. We recommend picking a color that is already incorporated into the room. For us, the pale pink shade was a no-brainer. It matches our pink office accessories and the back of the bookcase we painted as well. Now, the room feels balanced and more fun.
With all this painting, we know what you’re thinking, “Is it actually simple?” The answer is YES. The BEHR PREMIUM PLUS® Interior paints are a paint and a primer in one. There’s no need to purchase a primer in addition to the paint. Additionally, you’ll be excited to know that this paint is almost entirely odor free – seriously. The rosy and lime shades are both BEHR PREMIUM PLUS® Interior paints while the blue shade is BEHR PREMIUM PLUS ULTRA® Interior paint. This means all those great pros plus a stain and scuff resistant finish. Did we mention how happy we are with the finishes? The flat color looks incredible and offered great coverage as well.
This room now totally brightens our day! Doesn’t it just breed happiness? We find ourselves flipping the boards based on our mood or accessories and love how the little change makes such a big difference!
Throughout this project it has been amazing to see just how much color can change the vibe of a space. Before, our black ‘CREATE’ letters felt harsh and sort of out of place next to a colorful gallery wall and all-white furniture. Now, they blend right in and truly showcase the creativity we like to inspire.
Do you have a bookcase you’re looking to add a pop of color to? Maybe you want to make a statement with art or decor like we did with CREATE. Or maybe you’re inspired to take on a whole wall! Tell us what project you want to tackle in the comments! What color paint would you choose?
