Bright Bohemian Home Tour

Erica of 10.11 Makeup has the most amazing contemporary cool home we’re sharing on our lifestyle blog today! Bohemian elements such as a macrame runner, wooden furniture, so so many plants accent her concrete floors and bright white walls. Her and her hubby are the most DIY savvy too. They created some incredible shelving, accent pieces, and furniture for their home, attributing to making it all their own. Oh, and their two little boys (check out Knox’s birthday party here!) have the coolest play area and bedroom around. Check it out and get some major home inspiration ..and motivation!

How would you describe your design style?
I would say it’s like a mixture of West Elm meets Restoration Hardware meets a little modern and a lot of “home-made”… at least that’s what we were going for! When we moved in it was dark. The house had dark brown cabinets, dark mossy green walls, and darker flooring. When Joel, the hubs, asked what my dream would be, I said I wanted it to feel crisp, light and fresh. So we went with the most perfect light gray color we have ever found for the walls and white for pretty much everything else.  My favorite color is basically white and gold, and I have slowly realized the accent color in our home is plants 🙂

What are your favorite home trends happening now?
Plants! Especially hanging and draping ones inside! Seriously, I love the life it brings into a home. And I, for someone who has never kept a plant alive (I kill cacti), weirdly have an almost emotional connection to my plants . I love seeing them perk up after sitting outside in the fresh air while they get a little water. It’s totally weird I know, but I blame Carissa (JL Designs).

I also love exposed shelving, which I feel like is a big trend in home styling and design right now. Joel created ours using basic Pinterest tutorials. We went with a more industrial feel for our shelving, and I love it because it makes for a great space to showcase little trinkets, treasures, and fun decor.

Were there any DIY projects that went in to making it look how it does today?
Oh gosh, I feel like most of our home is a DIY project!  My hubs has become quite the crafty man. He follows Home Made Modern for DIY inspiration and has really done werrrrrk on our house. He, with incredible help from Mark Becklund, installed a floor to ceiling decorative wood wall along the main wall in our kid’s playroom. He also then did our entire backyard wall with wood paneling, and it seriously transformed the yard.

He made our coffee table by taking an old ikea table and wrapped it with wood. He also made our dining table with wood from raw 4×6 pine lumber and ordered the legs from Etsy. He built our exposed shelving and hall-tree using wood from Austin Hardwood (a quality lumber provider) industrial galvanized steel piping from Home Depot. He created the rolling side tables in our living room using recycled wood crates and added caster wheels from Home Depot. We love the natural, reclaimed/ weathered wood look, so Joel stained the majority of the wood pieces in our home with a homemade stain using water, vinegar and steel wool.

I took apart a wine rack that I hung on the wall behind the kitchen table and placed air-plants in the slots for decor. I was really proud of myself as Im the not-so-crafty one of the house.  One of my favorite “home-made” pieces are these huge  recycled wood crate panels that Joel painted “Speak Words of Life”  (stated during our vows) on that we have hanging in the entrance of our home- it is literally the first thing you see when you enter. Once you start DIY-ing your home you can’t stop.

Biggest Splurge for home decor:
I would say it was our flooring…. which obviously then led to us redoing all the base boards, door frames, doors, and hardware in the house. We removed all the old laminate flooring and tile to expose the concrete throughout the entire house and then sealed it with a clear coat. We also added hand crafted European white oak wood flooring, with an oil finish, in all of the bedrooms. Concrete floors are amazing because it is virtually impossible for my children to ruin them.

Biggest Steal for home decor:
My hubs! All the diy things he has created make the home feel “homey” and it not only adds a personal touch but it saved us a ton!

What is your favorite room in the house?
Our bedroom! It has been a dream for forever for us to say that. We have never really felt like our room was a retreat, or even finished/complete for that matter. We have moved 5 times in the last 4 years, but now we are home. I feel like our bedroom is perfectly bright and light and refreshing to walk into and I seriously love to just hang out in there.

Our bed was custom built and installed by a dear friend/client Renewd Furniture  (it’s amazing having bride’s that are incredibly talented!!), and we bought our bedroom storage (side tables, dresser, and wardrobe) from Ikea. We added midcentury legs from Home Depot to the dresser and painted them white. *Side note: you will want to add support to the center of the dresser when adding legs (we used basic 2×6 lumber) otherwise you will walk into your room one day and realize you can’t put away your clothes because all of the drawers are smashing together because your dresser is starting to bow.

For decor I added in a macrame table runner from Anthropologie to our dresser to bring in a little texture and to soften the look of the decor. I snagged the hexagon wall cubes mounted on our wall from Target and added some air plants for, you know, some color 🙂 Our fiddle leaf fig tree, also for color, is from Armstrongs, and I placed it in a basket from ikea. I wanted more height for the tree in the corner so I found a wire fruit basket at Home Goods and flipped it over to prop up the tree. It went perfectly with our wire hamper I scored on Amazon. Our bedding is all from Target as is my jewelry “organizer” on our dresser… aka a cute display for my fave necklaces and rings, justified by calling them organizers :). Joel made our curtain rod from galvanized plumbing pipe and I chose slightly sheer curtains from Target for a little bit of drama but with a soft and breezy feel. I wanted them thin enough to let light in and keep the room feeling alive… white bedroom curtains make you feel like you’re almost on vacation, amiright?!
I also do love our kitchen! It is partially the Italian in me to love being in a kitchen, but I really love ours. I love the open concept with all of the space and how it flows right into our living room. I’m obsessed with our viking oven, and the large island is so great for entertaining, and for the kiddos because they can sit and “help” me while I cook. Now, our backsplash, that just needs a little white subway tile love and then I think our kitchen will be perfect!

  1. Amazing house! White, grey, and gold are my choice of colors also. Where did that amazingly comfy couch come from?!
