Mom of two, and creator of Milk & Honey Babies, Ariana, is sharing a little bit about her life as a working mom with us on our business blog today! She’s tapped into the market for safe (and cute!) products moms want for themselves and their kids with her store, offering the best of the best in baby & pregnancy goods online and in store in Englewood, NJ. We absolutely love the products she carries and definitely have something to learn from this girl boss!

Tell us a little bit more about you and your family!

Mike and I have two adorable sometimes sassy little girls, Maya (7) and Avery (2). They could not be more polar opposites so there is rarely a dull moment in our house!

Did you gather any inspiration for your Milk & Honey Babies from your kids?

Maya and Avery were absolutely my inspiration for opening Milk & Honey! After becoming a Mom I was constantly looking for quality, safe eco friendly products for my two little girls.  I also found myself enjoying chatting with other parents about the latest and greatest products and gadgets on the market and the ease, or sometimes lack of, to access certain healthy and quality brands and products.  Milk & Honey provided the perfect opportunity to share and inform parents about these quality products. Becoming a mom was and continues to be the best and most satisfying experience of my life. As a mom I truly care about every product we recommend from your little one’s crib mattress to their diaper cream.

What does a typical work day look like for you?

After dropping my girls off at school I head over to the store around 8. We open at 10 but I use those first 2 hours to follow up on emails, place orders and catch up on industry news. Once the store opens, my team and I spend the day servicing customers,  fulfilling orders both in store and from our e-commerce site but the fun stuff and the joy of being “hands on” is talking with new parents and experiencing their excitement about their little one that’s on the way. Going over registry items and having that exchange about the benefits of certain products over others and how each product will fit in to their individual lifestyle is what makes it all worth it!  I love chatting with our customers and meeting the new additions to their family. Knowing that your helping to inform such major decisions comes with a lot of responsibility and a lot of reward as well!

What does a typical night at home with your family look like?

It includes a lot of laughter, sisterly bickering and cart wheels (my 7 year old just picked up gymnastics and of course my 2 year old is trying to mimic her but it looks more like a head roll more than anything)!  We have the usual routine; homework, bath time and dinner but Mike and I truly try to take dinner as a time to decompress in a way and just catch up on everyone’s day. As working parents sometimes you unavoidably bring work home but we really  make an effort to focus on our “foursome” for that half an hour to 45 minutes. And with a 7 year old and 2 years old there’s typically a funny story waiting to be told about someone’s imaginary friend or the “drama” on the playground that day.

How have you learned to manage an effective work/life balance?

Such an elusive balance…You always strive for effective time management helps but parenting an ever changing 2 year old definitely keeps things interesting! I struggle with not wanting to miss a minute of it 🙂 I guess the one thing I strive for is to be fully present in my work life during the day and fully present in my home life when the school days ends. Realistically, one side will get the short end of the stick from time to time but I try not to beat myself up over it too much because working moms wear many hats and we’re all doing the best we can.

We love the products you carry! What are your personal must-haves?

Thank you! Well two of the main essentials are the crib mattress and car seat new parents choose for their little one. Your infant is sure to spend a lot of time in these two places so you don’t want to skimp on these two pieces. I love the Nook Pebble Pure Crib Mattress! It’s 100% organic, incredibly soft but most importantly super breathable giving new parents invaluable peace of mind.  The Nuna Pipa Infant car seat is another fave. The extra protective feature of the steel stability leg is an added benefit, the installation of the car seat and base is a cinch, the design is super sleek and it features a “dream drape” canopy which is super protective and UPF 50+ and this car seat pairs perfectly which most of the top stroller systems on the market. The Babyzen YOYO stroller is hands down my personal favorite! Traveling with your little one can be challenging but taking solace is the fact that you don’t have to worry about the airlines mishandling your stroller is the absolute best feeling (I’ve experienced a few stroller mishaps when traveling). Because this stroller’s fold is so compact it becomes the size of an airline certified carry on so it can fit in the plane’s overhead compartment! Lastly, who doesn’t love the Honest diapers! They’re eco friendly, gentle enough for infants with sensitive skin and their whimsical prints are absolutely adorable!

What's one piece of advice you would pass on to other working moms?

Breathe! As a working mom it’s inevitable you will experience moments when you’re just overwhelmed. Try your best not to pass on those feelings to your little ones. Remember to be patient with them and let them be kids.  Sometimes you just have to back up and take a deep breath. Enjoy the ride and try to laugh with them as much as possible!
