PR Tips 101: The Grass is Always Greener

It seems it’s human nature to want something someone else has, but when we do that it’s easy to forget all that we have. Sometimes the product of all our hard work goes unnoticed; we’re so involved with our businesses we forget to appreciate our accomplishments. I was talking with my husband recently and brought up all these things I wanted to be doing and accomplishments I wanted to achieve because I was feeling stagnant. He graciously reminded me of all that I HAVE accomplished, which ironically was everything I had in mind when I started Be Inspired PR. I’m the type of person that is always pushing for better, dreaming for something bigger and setting goals that sometimes seem impossible. While all that is necessary for a business to continue to grow, we need to take time to appreciate how far we’ve come! For you, it may be frustrating if someone has more blog comments, more clients, more twitter followers or higher traffic on their website. That doesn’t mean we need to go chasing after someone else’s grass!

We all have so much to be proud of and if we take time to remember that it will fuel our drive far more than someone else’s accomplishments will! A positive and optimistic attitude will take us much farther than envy and jealousy. So while someone else may seem to have greener grass, remember all the blood, sweat and tears that went into yours!

  1. YES! We all should be counting our blessing everyday, not trying to compete with everyone around us!

  2. All too often we are driven to compete and achieve the same as our contemporaries whilst forgetting to pat ourselves on our backs for all that we achieve. This is a great post, thank you for reminding me to look at what I have done not just what I want to do.

  3. Everyone takes their own path to success… we don’t need to be doing everything everyone else is doing all the time. Wonderful post!

  4. I struggle with the same thing; always wanting to accomplish more, right now. What has really helped me focus on how far i’ve come is keeping a gratitude journal and writing in it every day. Sometimes we get so caught up with our to do lists that we forget to celebrate our blessings and achievements, which is sooo important!

  5. Well said. I truly enjoyed your post. Sometimes we loose sight of how far we’ve come when we’re busy chasing after where we’d like to go.

  6. My thoughts exactly! I often wonder why we neglect to look at the positive things in our lives and be grateful for them. Instead we focus on what we CAN’T do and what we HAVEN’T done. This post reminds me that we need to be grateful for all the successes in our life, big or small. I love your blog…you should be very proud that you have created a happy place in blogsphere.

  7. Thank you for this!!! I get so drowned in my everyday routine and madness and sometimes need to take a step back and see all that I have personally accomplished to give me a little more praise than I normally do. I feel great after reading this and will print it to put on my board to remind myself to be grateful and happy of all the wonderful things I have in my life! Kudos to you too!!

  9. Very sweet and true post. Annabel and I have come so far, it’s sometimes hard to believe where we started.
As long as you enjoy the ride and give to others.. it’s all worth it!

  10. I also think it’s easy to think “this isn’t enough” when you don’t know how others perceive your work. So often I see someone on the street and think “What awesome hair!” or “Such great style!” and never tell that person. Imagine about all the people who are thinking lovely thoughts about your life right now!

  11. @weddingPR Great post. And thanks for putting it in perspective. I think most small business owners can feel like this.

  12. I don’t know what my grass looks like. There has been snow covering it for last 3 months. 🙂

  13. This is such a great post. It’s so easy to get moving so quickly that you lose sight of what’s current and what you’ve accomplished thus far. We are guilty of this as well and try to remember to celebrate even the “smallest” of victories.

  14. So true! Just like there is someone who is always smarter, thinner, prettier…A nice reminder to take inventory of our own accomplishments and give ourselves a break some times.
